James M. Slater is an associate attorney in Lalchandani Simon PL’s healthcare and technology practices. James has experience in commercial and employment litigation, administrative disputes, and transactional matters.

Prior to joining the firm, James served as a judicial law clerk to the Honorable Chris M. McAliley, United States Magistrate Judge for the Southern District of Florida. There, he managed a docket of civil and criminal cases and drafted orders and reports and recommendations on a wide array of federal matters. Before clerking, James was a litigator at a boutique commercial litigation firm where he primarily worked on fraud, breach of contract, antitrust, class action, and shareholder disputes. James also practiced at Legal Services of Greater Miami, Inc., where he provided legal counsel to individuals experiencing homelessness. James has also worked as a director for the U.S. Department of State’s Critical Language Scholarship Program in Kazan, Russia; a researcher in Saint-Petersburg, Russia, for the Norwegian nonprofit Bellona; a translator for the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum; and a Russian-language instructor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

James received his law degree, cum laude, from the University of Miami. At the University of Miami, James interned for the Human Rights Clinic, where he advocated for migrants’ rights here in the United States. While in the Human Rights Clinic, James traveled to Geneva, Switzerland to present before the United Nations Human Rights Committee. In law school, James also interned for Bet Tzedek Legal Services in Los Angeles, California, where he assisted Russian-speaking Holocaust survivors with reparations matters. James also competed in the Frankfurt Investment Arbitration Competition in Frankfurt, Germany, and presented on legal topics at the University of Leipzig in Leipzig, Germany.

James obtained his M.A. in Slavic Languages and Literatures from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His Master’s thesis was on the hidden role of chess in Vladimir Nabokov’s King, Queen, Knave. He received his B.A. in Russian from the University of Florida. James also studied at Saint-Petersburg State University in Russia as part of the prestigious National Security Education Program Russian Overseas Flagship.

James is fluent in Russian and enjoys spending time learning new languages. He also enjoys kayaking, hiking, and learning about horticulture and botany. James served as a director on the board of the Dade County Bar Association Young Lawyers Section, and is currently on the board of directors of the educational nonprofit farm Yiddish Farm. He also maintains an active pro bono practice, which has included work with the local ACLU legal panel and Clemency Project 2014.
